Tips for a Healthy Pond in Late Summer and Early Fall

As the seasons begin to shift, your pond requires a little extra attention to stay healthy and beautiful. Late summer heat and the approach of fall bring unique challenges, from fluctuating water temperatures to the start of falling leaves. By taking a few proactive steps, you can maintain a healthy pond that thrives well into autumn and prepares it for the colder months ahead.

1. Manage Debris Before It Builds Up

Late summer storms and the first signs of fall often bring leaves, twigs, and plant material into your pond. Left unchecked, debris can sink, decompose, and cause water quality issues. Use a skimmer net regularly and consider installing protective pond netting to make cleanup easier.

2. Watch Your Fish’s Diet

Koi and goldfish metabolisms are tied to water temperature. In the heat of late summer, they remain active and will happily eat high-protein food. As temperatures drop into the 60s, switch to a lower-protein, wheat germ–based cold water fish food that’s easier to digest. This prepares your fish for the slower winter months while helping them store up nutrients for hibernation.

3. Prune and Refresh Plants

Pond plants help keep create a healthy pond with a balanced ecosystem, but by late summer some of your plants may look tired or faded. Trim yellowing leaves and remove spent blooms to prevent decay. It’s also a great time to refresh your pond with new hardy aquatic plants that will carry beauty into fall. Healthy plants improve water quality and reduce algae growth.

4. Maintain Proper Water Circulation

Warm days and cool nights can reduce oxygen levels, stressing your fish. Make sure your pump, filters, and pond aerators are running efficiently. Adding an aeration system or keeping a waterfall flowing ensures steady oxygen levels and healthier water for both plants and fish.

5. Prepare for Falling Leaves

As autumn approaches, leaves will inevitably begin to drop. Stay ahead of the mess by placing pond netting over the pond to catch them before they sink. Regular maintenance now will save you hours of cleanup later and help prevent harmful muck buildup over winter.
