Ecosystem Pond in New Boston, New Hampshire

An exquisite setting required a unique approach. The home sits atop an open vista, adorned with large expanses of open ledge. From anywhere in the backyard, the mountain view is stunning. The pond parallels a second-floor deck along its 25-foot length. At the far end, one can gaze at the schooling fish, swimming and playing below; at the near end a steppingstone path crosses the stream. The headwaters of the stream well up from the wetland like a natural spring. The waters spill from two points, creating additional views from the deck, gazebo, hot tub, and bedroom. By day, twinkling sunlight flashes off the surface, warming your face. By night, elegantly lit waterfalls shimmer in the canopies of tall trees. The sunset colors blend a pallet of wood, moss, and lichen, giving life and age to the landscape. Built to mimic a mountain stream, water slowly wears and grinds its path through layers of time. Two streams converge, approximately halfway down, creating large, wide waterfalls with a calming flow.

Enjoyed equally from all vantage points, the true magic happens at sunset – the gloaming, which is the most fanciful time of the day. All things glowing, shimmering, warming, with the last rays of sun, your reward for the toils of the day!
