Thursday: 2:00 p.m.
Arrive at camp at 2 p.m. for set-up of the competitions so everyone can practice. Nearby activities are available such as fishing, boating, hiking, mountain biking, and off-roading to name a few. If there is sufficient interest and time, we can go spelunking in Big Bear. For your evening meal, there is a good sushi restaurant about 10 minutes from camp and restaurants in Crestline about twenty minutes away.
Friday: Breakfast at 8:00 a.m.
Each person will make their own sack lunch with the assortment of food provided. Leave for Lake Arrowhead to practice pond construction skills such as tractor safety, tractor tipping, and rock splitting. There will also be a list of alternate activities available. After lunch, we will go on a discovery hike to look at a variety of things. Plant identification, medicinal and edible uses, survival considerations, geology, geography, water, and history will all be discussed. For some, this is their favorite part of Weekend at Bernie’s. Bernie has lived in the mountains and studied this area for over fifty years and has a lot to share. We will have dinner at about 6:00 pm.
Saturday: Breakfast 8:00 a.m.
After breakfast, we will depart on an off road excursion that you will not forget. For most of you, this will be a once in a lifetime experience in a highly modified 4×4 vehicle with a very experienced driver. We will depart on an all-day trip on the roughest dirt roads that the mountains have to offer. You’ll be amazed where these vehicles can go and the thrills you will have doing it! Chris Hanson described it best when he said, “It is like going on a roller coaster at three miles per hour.” The scenery is also remarkable.
The drivers are volunteering their time for this excursion. It’s recommend that each passenger donate $25 per passenger to a fund that will be distributed to the drivers. These vehicles are very expensive and cost a lot to keep them running. It would not be unusual to see some vehicles in the $100,000 range. The drivers love doing this and look forward to Weekend at Bernie’s every year. Note: The $25 is above the registration fee.
Dinner and games start around 6:00 p.m. The games (competitions) include tomahawk throwing, spark-based fire making, and possibly horse shoes. Prizes will be awarded.
Sunday: Breakfast 8:00 a.m.
We’ll discuss the weekend’s events and pack up. If time allows, we can enjoy a quick hike.
Note: For those of you who are flying in, extra camping gear is available so you don’t have to bring your own. Bernie can supply tents, sleeping bags, chairs, etc.
