Building and keeping professional relationships is one of the most important pieces of business advice I can give to any pond builder! This approach has certainly helped Aquascape grow to the point where it is today. The idea is simple. Find complementary business owners and companies and help each other grow your businesses.
Let me share a quick story to illustrate. We installed a $40K Pondless Waterfall at the entrance to an industrial park, which came from a contractor I first met in 1995. He owned a garden center and offered landscape design and construction services
Aquascape was just starting to work with and train contractors at that time and I was helping Jay and his crew on various pond projects. The relationship grew along with both of our businesses. This concept then became our mission statement of "helping our customers succeed with building, selling and retailing water features."
Jay's business changed and he now works for one of the largest landscape design and construction companies in Chicago. Our working relationship fell off over the years, but we'd still see each other at various industry events and kept an open dialog. And when the time was right we reconnected our working relationship.
We've done several water feature projects with him recently; he no longer wants to build them he just wants them installed properly and efficiently. So he uses our services for the water features and his business handles the rest of the project.
The Pondless® Waterfall at the industrial park is actually a small fraction of the overall project as the property is 300 acres with multiple warehouses and roadways, all landscaped and maintained by Jay and his team. The waterfall is the main focus so it needs to be done right the first time.
I have similar stories for a variety of different contacts over the years and you never know where future work is going to come from. It's important to keep an open rapport with contacts over the years. After all, word of mouth and existing customers continue to be our number one source for construction projects.
